Although
the exact date of Joseph Alleine's birth is not known, records show
that he was baptised on 8 April, 1634 in the parish of Devizes, Wiltshire,
England, the place of his birth. He was born into a wealthy family
but by the age of 10, the English Civil War (July 1643) had reduced
the family income severely and it was at great financial sacrifice,
he was ultimately schooled at Oxford University, taught by such Puritan
greats as John Owens and Thomas Goodwin. In 1655 Alleine received
a call to be a co-pastor to George Newton in Taunton, Somerset, a
Puritan stronghold, where he also married...his church is pictured
on the cover of this book. In 1662 the 'Act of Uniformity' cast 2000
Puritan ministers out ot the church..Newton and Alleine included.
An Alarm to the Unconverted is Joseph Alleine's legacy.
