In
personal character and in the discharge of his pastoral functions,
Thomas Boston must be reckoned among the greatest of the Scottish
divines. Born at Duns in Berwickshire in the year 1676 he loved to
read the Bible at age 7 and at age 11, "was awakened to a deep
concern about the eternal state of his soul."
Impressed upon by the words of Christ in Matthew 4:19, "Follow
me and I will make you fishers of men" brought him into the desire
of seeing that mandate accomplished in his life and later wrote the
classic , A Soliloquy on the Art of Man-Fishing. the work presented
here. Boston died in 1732 at the age of 57..and while yet living,
his name was pronounced with reverence and has become synonymous with
holy living.
For an added blessing we include a sermon entitled Christ Crucified
by a contemporary of Thomas Boston, Thomas Halyburton.
Dr. A. S. Wayne Pearce is the reader of both works; whose Scottish
accent is sure to add flavor to the works of these well known Scotsmen.
He holds a doctorate in post-Reformation Scottish Church History
and is in process of planting/establishing a Reformed Church in
an area long without a Reformed congregation. He is married and
has two children and lives in Scotland.
