study the details of these two principles, Love & Duty, they will
look like two different religions, and yet of course we know that
in many respects they must be blended. Those who are religious from
the duty principle (Mt. Sinai), must have a measure of love to sustain
them, and as it were, to lubricate the wheels of duty. On the other
hand, those who are religious out of personal love (Mt. Calvary) for
God, must have a measure of holy fear and conscientiousness in order
to give fiber to their sentiments and their fine affections. A great
deal depends in every Christian life on which of these two principles
