The
subject of this book is Spurgeon's thought and teaching, arising out
of definite historical contexts and is not a biography; centering
largely around the three major controversies of his ministry. The
first concerns his early witness against a diluted evangelicalism;
the second arose out of a sermon on Baptismal Regeneration, preached
June 5, 1864; the third was from 1887 until his death five years later
and centered around his protest against the Down-Grade movement in
the churches. It is needful to re-examine the three controversies
if we are to better understand what Spurgeon firmly believed concerning
the direction he saw the church going in his day. Spurgeon is seen
as "no genial pulpiteer and humorist, but a man of granite, who thundered
out to his generation the timeless truths of the Word of God. Like
John Ploughman he drove a straight furrow and from his example we
may gain fresh vision and determination." |
