Books by or about Charles H. Spurgeon on Tape
Charles Haddon Spurgeon was born at Kelvedon, Essex on June 19, 1834 and died January 31, 1892. At 18 months Spurgeon went to live with his grandparents and his maiden aunt for six years. His father as well as his grandfather were ministers and from early on he was taught the Puritan's doctrine of Calvinism. He was converted at 16 and had his first Pastorate at 17, he had a single eye to the glory of God. His ministries included Pastor of New Park Street Church at Southwark and later at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, an orphanage, a College for the training of Doctrines of Grace preachers, a colportage, (printing and distribution of printed material) a monthly Newsletter "The Sword and the Trowel" which stayed in existance long after his death. He was called "the Prince of Preachers" and during his life was imbroiled in three "controversies" in which he spent and was spent. Plagued with ill health..standing almost alone in the last (the Downgrade Controversy) stand to keep "free willism" and the "invitation" and "inquiry room" heresies from overtaking Protestantism in England..as well as the battle with the Church of England, which he called "the nursery for Papists." He went to Mentone, France for a rest but died there. Interest in Spurgeon's writings is growing more and more today.
